Compositeur et parolier américain, Cole Porter a apporté un élan international à la comédie musicale américaine, incarnant dans sa vie la sophistication de ses chansons.
Porter était dans l'armée française pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il a passé les années 20 à Paris et a commencé à marquer des hits dans cette décennie. La liste des spectacles et des films de Porter est immense. Ses paroles étaient lettrées, sophistiquées, mais pouvaient être charmantes, suggestives, voire vilaines.
Son premier spectacle était Paris en 1928.Porter est retourné à New York en 1930, mais était un Parisien à vie dans son coeur.
Les jambes de Porter ont été écrasées par un cheval en 1937. Il a finalement perdu sa jambe droite en 1958.
Ses chansons continuent à vivre. De nombreuses anthologies et recueils de chansons consacrés à sa musique ont été publiés.
