Chrystyna Marie - Life 2017 Chrystyna Marie has a unique and powerful sound. Her music blends blues, rock, and country, and it sounds fabulous. As you listen to her tunes on this new EP will you find that each song kind of sounds different than the last, allowing these genres to spread throughout the music instead of always being crammed into each and every one of the songs. Chrystyna started her musical background in classical training. The Canadian-born singer put that training into her one-of-a-kind vocals. You’ll see me compare her music to some other artists, but they are loose comparisons because her sound is pretty unique. As you listen you’ll also hear the influences of some of the music that has inspired her sound, from Janis Joplin and Etta James to Christina Aguilera. She spent time in a pop band, but always had more of a passion for the singer/songwriter life, although you can still hear some pop influences in some of her songs, including the first release from the new EP Life, “I Want That Boom Boom.” “I Want That Boom Boom” is one of the songs that fits into the pop genre on this EP, but still has kind of a blues-like flare to it. It has enough of a country-vibe to make it sound like it would make an excellent song for line dancing as well. It has a great beat to move to and changes pace often enough that someone could definitely come up with some clever dance moves to go along with it. “Devil With The Angel Eyes” is definitely filled with country goodness. It kind of reminded me of another Canadian-born country star, Shania Twain. The fact that Chrystyna can sound perfectly country while avoiding that “twang” sound makes her kind of country that which would be appealing to far more people. “Mr. Insecurity” delves into a very serious blues sound. This is one of my favorite songs on the EP, mainly because the lyrics remind me of a past relationship. I especially find myself attracted to songs that I can really relate to and feel in my bones, and this is one of them. I also love Chrystyna’s vocals on this one. The music is dark and misty and her vocals are so bluesy and beautiful. “The Witching Hour” could be described as country blues. “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out” probably has the most truthful song title ever created. It’s another bluesy tune (minus the country). This is a nice blues bar sounding song, perfect with a glass of whiskey on ice. “A Woman Knows” continues the bluesy sound of this EP. I love the instruments on this one. It makes it a song worth listening to, as it has a ton more going on for it than just Chrystyna’s powerful vocals and well-written lyrics. “Mama’s Blues” is definitely another blues song. Of all the genres of music that Chrystyna touches on in this EP, blues and country are definitely where her sound should stay, especially bluesy country. I really enjoyed her music, but much more enjoyed the songs that fit more in the blues genre than the more poppy tunes, like “I Want That Boom Boom.” The EP finishes off with “Stop Stoppin’ Myself,” which is another country song, kind of reminiscent of Miranda Lambert. It’s a great country tune and made an excellent final song for this album by a very talented woman. Chrystyna says about her music, "Breath is life, and life is music. I wanted to create music from personal experiences and true emotions. Something the everyday person can relate to and build strength from having been exposed to it.
