L'influence d'Edward Elgar est incontestable sur les compositeurs britanniques, tels que Holst, Tippett et Britten. Compositeur largement autodidacte (initié à la musique par son père), Edward Elgar ne se limite pas à un genre en particulier : son œuvre musicale est composée de symphonies et concertos (Concerto pour violoncelle en mi mineur op.85 ), de musique pour chœur, cantates et oratorios (The Dream of Gerontius ), de ballets (The Sanguine Fan ), de musique de chambre (Salut d’Amour ), et de musique pour clavier ainsi que pour orgue (Sonate pour orgue en sol op.28 ).
Bien qu’il soit apprécié pendant sa carrière pour sa musique anglaise, Elgar se sent tout de même excentré, culturellement et musicalement, de la société anglaise contemporaine : son manque de formation musicale de conservatoire (et une forte influence musicale européenne plutôt que britannique), sa foi catholique romaine, ainsi que ses origines de classe moyenne, font qu’Elgar n’atteint pas la renommée avant ses quarante ans. Reconnue aujourd’hui principalement pour son aspect mélodique, sa musique fait partie du canon musical ; Edward Elgar est aujourd’hui considéré comme un pilier incontournable de la musique anglaise.
