Les 21 et 22 avril 1999, Metallica joue avec l'orchestre de la San Francisco Symphony, dirigé par Michael Kamen. Kamen, qui a précédemment travaillé sur le titre Nothing Else Matters, a proposé au groupe en 1991 l'idée d'un orchestre symphonique au sein de Metallica. Kamen et son équipe de plus de 100 musiciens composent alors pour le groupe. À cette occasion, Metallica compose deux nouvelles chansons avec Kamen, No Leaf Clover et Human. Les enregistrements audio et vidéo paraissent en 1999 sous le titre de S&M, abréviation de Symphony & Metallica. Il arrive à la seconde place du Billboard 200, et à la première place des ARIA Charts et des Top Internet Albums.
