Les fans de Dee Dee Bridgewater avaient découvert ce jeune trompettiste dans son groupe au début de la décennie. Theo Croker fut repéré par la chanteuse quand il jouait à Shanghai où il résida sept années. Une rencontre qui devait inciter Dee Dee à produire son premier album pour le label Okeh en 2014 (Afro Physicist).

Pour son troisième disque, le trompettiste originaire de Floride confirme qu’il n’a rien oublié des fondamentaux du jazz tout en plongeant dans les expressions les plus contemporaines (hip-hop, fusion…).
S’il a fait connaissance avec l’instrument-roi à l’écoute, adolescent, de son grand-père, le très classique Doc Cheatham, Theo Croker ne cache pas son admiration pour Roy Hargrove, qu’il invita sur son précédent album. « Je voulais que cet album fasse ressentir des paysages terrestres, cosmiques, urbains et sauvages à la fois », confie le trompettiste trentenaire dans le texte de présentation.

Vaste programme, pour reprendre la formule d’un illustre chef d’Etat. De fait Theo Croker ne se limite pas à nous montrer sa vélocité, il construit un univers qui prête à une rêverie sans frontières. Revigorant.
