Le jazzman Abdullah Ibrahim revient avec un nouvel album, The Balance

À 84 ans, le musicien originaire de Cape Town en Afrique du Sud, également connu sous le pseudonyme de Dollar Brand, annonce son premier album en cinq ans.

Né à Cape Town en 1934, en plein apartheid, Abdullah Ibrahim a toujours su trouver l’équilibre entre ses diverses influences, à l’image de la ville portuaire où il a grandi, épicentre du brassage culturel national.

Inspiré par les musiques populaires et traditionnelles sud africaines, son ‘Township Jazz’ tisse un fil conducteur entre le jazz classique et moderne, profondément marqué par sa rencontre et collaboration avec le légendaire Duke Ellington. Abdullah Ibrahim incarne le jazz dans sa pluralité, dans son esprit de dialogue et d’échange, dans le dépassement des frontières, dans sa conscience politique et sociale. Ainsi, ayant lui-même subi l’apartheid, il jouera à la cérémonie d’investiture de Nelson Mandela en 1994.

Ce nouveau projet, The Balance, fait suite à son dernier LP The Song is My Story sorti en 2014. Le nouvel opus, enregistré avec son septet de longue date Ekaya, rend hommage à sa vision du jazz.

Le grand retour d'Abdullah Ibrahim, légende vivante du jazz, avec un tout nouvel album studio enregistré avec son groupe Ekaya aux studios RAK à Londres Abdullah Ibrahim (qui a également enregistré sous le nom Dollar Brand) est l'un des musiciens les plus connus d'Afrique du Sud. Sa musique est souvent citée comme symbole de la liberté. Son hymne anti-apartheid "Mannenberg" (sorti aux Etats-Unis sous le nom de "Capetown Fringe") est désormais considéré comme un hymne national non officiel en Afrique du Sud. Il s'est même produit lors de l'inauguration de Nelson Mandela, où Mandela l'a surnommé "notre Mozart". Il a joué avec tous les plus grands, de Duke Ellington à Max Roach, John Coltrane à Ornette Coleman, et est le père du rappeur underground Jean Grae. Englobant TownshipJazz, piano solo, Highlife et de nombreux styles de jazz moderne, ce tout nouvel album studio (enregistré avec son groupe Ekaya aux studios RAK à Londres) est un retour majeur pour cette véritable légende du jazz qu'est Abdullah Ibrahim.

At the age of 84, Abdullah Ibrahim (AKA Dollar Brand) is set to release his first new album in four years. Entitled 'The Balance', this project features his long-time septet Ekaya, a line-up that he's been recording with since 1983. In this case, the album was recorded over the course of one day at London's RAK Studios last November. The lush horn lines, lilting melodies, and uplifting chord progressions are characteristic of Abdullah's own particular brand of Township Jazz. This is contrasted with various solo piano improvisations, which epitomise the nostalgic yet hopeful nature of Abdullah's musical spirit. Hence, The Balance.

In his own words, "We push ourselves out of our comfort zones. So that we can present to the listener our striving for excellence. So that we can engage with our listeners without any barriers of our ego. It's not jazz. For us, it's a process of transcending barriers."
