Chanteur et producteur de musique funk/soul/blues américain.
Johnson a chanté et joué avec les artistes de blues Magic Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells et Howlin' Wolf dans les années 1950, avant d'enregistrer avec Jimmy Reed pour Vee Jay Records en 1959. Il fait ses débuts en solo la même année avec Federal Records (2), une filiale de King Records (3) de Cincinnati, soutenu par Freddie King à la guitare.
Il commence ensuite à enregistrer pour Twinight Records de Chicago au milieu des années 1960. À partir de son premier tube, Come On Sock It to Me, en 1967, Johnson domine le label en tant que faiseur de tubes et producteur.
Comme d'autres auteurs-compositeurs noirs de l'époque, plusieurs de ses disques explorent à cette époque les thèmes de l'identité afro-américaine et des problèmes sociaux dans des chansons comme Is It Because I'm Black, qui atteint la 11e place des charts R&B en 1969.
En 1971, Willie Mitchell a fait appel à Johnson pour Hi Records, pour qui il a enregistré trois albums et un certain nombre de singles. Produits à Memphis avec le groupe Hi, ces disques ont donné naissance à une musique puissante et durable, dont les succès We Did It, Back for a Taste of Your Love et Take Me to the River, son plus grand succès, qui lui a valu d'atteindre la septième place des charts R&B en 1975. Cependant, chez Hi Johnson, Al Green a toujours été dans l'ombre, dans une certaine mesure, sur le plan commercial, voire artistique.
Après la fin des années Hi, Johnson a produit deux LP pour son propre label Shama, dont le dernier (Ms. Fine Brown Frame, 1982) a été repris pour être distribué par Boardwalk Records, Inc. et a produit le dernier succès de Johnson, le title cut.
Vers le milieu des années 80, Johnson a lancé une entreprise de restauration rapide de poisson et s'est mis en semi-retraite, ne faisant que des apparitions occasionnelles dans les clubs de blues.
En 1992, Johnson découvre que sa chanson classique Different Strokes a été samplée par de nombreux rappeurs, dont Wu-Tang Clan, MC Hammer et Geto Boys. Stimulé par ce fait, il a décidé de faire un retour dans le monde de la musique. En 1994, il a sorti l'album Back in the Game sur Delmark Records. L'album mettait en vedette la section rythmique Hi et sa plus jeune fille Syleena Johnson.
Le guitariste et chanteur de blues Jimmy Johnson (8 ans) et le bassiste Mack Thompson sont ses frères.
