Harry Belafonte est un chanteur, acteur et militant des droits civiques américain, né le 1er mars 1927
à Harlem dans la ville de New York. Monte Kay, directeur artistique du Royal Roost sur Broadway, a souvent
apprécié ses talents de chanteur, et l’engage dans son club de jazz comme chanteur intermittent.
Quelques mois plus tard, il signe pour ce qui sera un long et fructueux contrat avec la RCA Victor.
En 1956, son troisième album, Calypso, atteint le million d'exemplaires vendus. Il gagne le surnom de
« King of Calypso » (« Roi du Calypso »)... Calypso est le troisième album studio de Harry Belafonte,
sorti chez RCA Victor (LPM-1248) en 1956. L'album est le second de Belafonte à être classé numéro 1 au
Billboard Top Pop Albums, pendant 31 semaines. En 2018, Calypso est choisi par la Library of Congress
pour être conservé par la National Recording Registry pour son "importance culturelle, historique et artistique"
