Eric Clapton, né en 1945 au Royaume-Uni est un guitariste, compositeur et chanteur de blues et de rock.
Il grandit dans une famille décomposé et est élevé par ses grand-parents. Ce climat familial difficile fait de lui un enfant terrible, pas vraiment brillant à l’école. A 13 ans il reçoit sa première guitare et plus tard il intègre une école d’art à Kingston dont il sera très vite renvoyé.
Finalement il se concentre sur l’apprentissage de la guitare et puise son inspirations dans le blues américain et ses artistes phares Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf et surtout Robert Johnson, le légendaire bluesman du Mississippi. Eric se produit alors dans de nombreux clubs de Londres.
En 1964, il rejoint de Yardbirds, groupe au sein duquel il fait ses armes mais il les quitte deux ans plus tard pour fonder Cream, avec deux autres musiciens célèbres, Ginger Baker et Jack Bruce. Avec Cream, Eric Clapton en profite pour composer des morceaux et s'adonner au chant. Le groupe sort trois albums qui rencontrent un franc succès et Clapton renforce sa réputation de "meilleur guitariste du monde". A cette époque, il collabore avec George Harrison des Beatles, et apparaît même sur l'"album blanc" du célèbrissime groupe britannique. En 1969, après d'éprouvantes batailles d'egos avec Baker et Bruce, le groupe se dissout et Clapton fonde Blind Faith avec Ginger Baker. Mais cela ne dure pas et après moins d'une année, il rejoint Delaney & Bonnie, un couple de musiciens de blues dont Clapton apprécie la simplicité. Il les quitte en 1970 et réalise enfin son premier album solo, intitulé Eric Clapton. Il collabore à nouveau avec George Harrison, ainsi qu'avec John Lennon et Yoko Ono. En 1970, il fonde un nouveau groupe avec une partie des membres de Delaney & Bonnie et avec le guitariste Duane Allman: Derek And The Dominos. Ils enregistrent Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, un album qui demeure un standard du lues-rock. Plus tard, le morceau Layla aura un succès retentissant. La carrière de Derek And The Dominos se trouve compromise par le décès brutal de Duane Allman lors d'un accident en 1971. Après la sortie de l'album live In Concert, le groupe se dissout et Eric Clapton sombre dans la drogue pendant trois ans. Il sort du tunnel en 1974 avec son second album solo, 461 Ocean Boulevard. Sur ce disque, on trouve la célèbre reprise de Bob Marley, I Shot The Sheriff, qui a rencontré un grand succès et contribué à faire connaître le reggae en dehors de la Jamaïque. Les années 90 ne sont pas en reste, avec Unplugged (1992) et From The Cradle (1994) dans lequel il reprend avec brio de vieux standards du blues. Il collabore également avec Carlos Santana et BB King. En 2004, il sort Me & Mr Johnson, un autre album de reprises, du bluesman Robert Johnson cette fois. En 2005, il reforme Cream avec ses deux compères Bruce et Baker le temps de quelques concerts et sort Back Home, un album solo qui comporte cette fois des morceaux originaux. En 2006 il collabore avec le célèbre JJ Cale sur The Road To Escondido.
Le magazine Rolling Stones l’a classé 4e meilleur guitariste de tous les temps en 2003.
