Intronisé au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Chicago est devenu le premier groupe non classique à se produire six soirs de suite au Carnegie Hall il y a 50 ans.
Entre le 5 et le 10 avril 1971, le groupe a joué huit spectacles dans la célèbre salle (dont deux matinées) et a enregistré chacun d'entre eux.
En octobre de la même année, les temps forts de la performance ont été présentés sur le tout premier album live du groupe, Chicago at Carnegie Hall.
Ce quadruple LP a atteint la troisième place du Billboard 200, a été certifié platine et reste l'album live le plus vendu du groupe.
Pour honorer le 50e anniversaire des concerts historiques de Chicago, le groupe sort pour la première fois
les huit spectacles du Carnegie Hall dans leur intégralité dans un nouveau coffret de luxe de 16 CD.
Il capture le groupe au sommet de ses pouvoirs live, mettant en vedette les solos incendiaires de guitare blues-rock de Terry Kath,
les tambours furieux de Danny Seraphine et la triple menace vocale de Kath, Robert Lamm et Peter Cetera.
Cependant, Chicago au Carnegie Hall n’a pas été sans controverse. Columbia Records était sceptique quant à la vente d’une collection aussi imposante,
acceptant de la sortir seulement après que le producteur James Guercio ait plaidé au nom du groupe.
Loughnane et l’ingénieur Tim Jessup ont passé près d’un an à travailler sur plus de 40 bandes de concerts
dans le studio situé chez Loughnane pour remasteriser chaque concert.
