Joshua Redman est le fils du saxophoniste Dewey Redman1. Il sort diplômé de l'université d'Harvard en 19912. Il remporte la Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Saxophone Competition la même année et se consacre désormais à sa carrière musicale3.

Joshua Redman s'est spécialisé dans le saxophone ténor et soprano, comme son père Dewey Redman. En 2011 il participe au projet James Farm sur le label Nonesuch Records avec Aaron Parks, Matt Penman et Eric Harland.
