Je vous présente "BEN HARPER-BLOODLINE MAINTENANCE"
The blues has always been the breeding ground of Ben Harper's music. Since his inaugural classic Welcome To The Cruel World in 1994, he has enriched it over the course of fifteen albums of rock, folk, soul or gospel influences. But this sixteenth album titled Bloodline Maintenance is different. Recorded by Ben Harper without his blues-rock band the Innocent Criminals, the album appears as a great and beautiful soul turn in the discography of the American guitarist-singer. Ben Harper seems to have dreamed up this record after listening to a best-of of the greatest soul classics, including Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and of course Marvin Gaye. On several occasions, reminiscences of What's Going On slip into the songs of Bloodline Maintenance, or rather inspire them. Harmonies, a dancing guitar riff or a crying saxophone riff, such a subtle and sensual way of singing worry. But Bloodline Maintenance is not for all that a trinket of forger or revivalist as there are so many and too many. The wise Ben Harper knows that when it comes to soul, nothing will ever beat the originals. He sings soul in his own way, with his experience, his subjects (racism, ecology…) and his bluesman instruments which sound rather acoustic and rustic. Without the debauchery of Motown means, Ben Harper reinvents a domestic soul, sober, which saves its effects, perfect for the time. From the first a cappella track, rooted in the gospel tradition, to the last, Maybe I Can't, a magnificent melody free from any influence, Ben Harper signs here one of his best albums, the one where he manages to renew himself without ever deny oneself.
