The Chess Box est la plus grande compilation des œuvres de ce pionnier du rock and roll couvrant l'ensemble de sa carrière chez Chess, soit de 1955 à 1974. L'originalité de Bo Diddley réside d'abord dans le fait que, comme pour son mentor John Lee Hooker, il voyait en la guitare un instrument de percussion. Si bien que, comme Hooker, Diddley est d'abord l'homme d'un des riffs de guitare les plus connus et repris de l'histoire de la musique populaire. Si les 282 pistes, qui incluent plusieurs inédits et versions alternatives, sont présentées en ordre chronologique, les douze CDs ne correspondent pas pour autant aux 33 tours de Diddley et ils n'expriment pas non plus un thème particulier. Ainsi, le matériel d'un 33 tours s'étale parfois sur deux CDs plutôt que d'être réuni sur un seul. Toutefois, un livret de 80 pages offre une biographie abondamment illustrée et tous les détails des sessions d'enregistrement.
