The Velvet Underground est un groupe de rock américain des sixties, originaire de New York, composé de Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Moe Tucker et brièvement de la chanteuse allemande Nico, intimement lié à la Factory d’Andy Warhol. Peu connu en dehors du milieu underground dans lequel il a prospéré durant sa brève existence (1964-1973, et encore en 73 ne ressemblait-il vraiment plus beaucoup au groupe de départ), il a pourtant eu une influence déterminante sur plusieurs courants musicaux allant du rock alternatif au new wave et du punk au glam rock. The Velvet Underground & Nico est par exemple considéré par le magazine Rolling Stone comme l’album le plus influent de tous les temps, et tout simplement comme l’un des tout premiers meilleurs albums jamais produit.

Ont été retenus dans la release les albums officiels dans différentes versions (Deluxe, Super Deluxe, MegaSuperHyperboliquementDeluxe, etc.) aux contenus très différents, les principaux live et les compilations dans lesquelles ont pu être insérées des inédits, plus quelques pistes bonus dans les derniers dossiers.
