contenant du nouveau matériel original depuis plus de 21 ans depuis Up (2002), marquant le plus long
écart entre deux albums studio de sa carrière solo. De plus, I/O est son plus long album studio à ce jour.
I/O était en préparation depuis près de trois décennies, sa production initiale remontant à 1995,
à peu près au même moment où Gabriel commençait à enregistrer Up.
