In this heartbreaking novel by Kristin Hannah, Lexi Bale, an unwanted foster child is taken in by her great aunt Eva. Upon attending her first day at her new high school, she meets wealthy twins Mia and Zach, and the three friends become inseparable. They attend high school parties that lead to the three friends making the wrong decisions. On their graduation party, the three of them decide to drive home rather than call the twins’ mother to come for them. This leads to a horrific accident which leaves Mia fatally injured. Upon Mia’s death jude does not take care of herself and Lexi loses everything and eventually has a child by her boyfriend Zach. Upon being released from prison, Lexi finds it hard to apply for a job or get a proper home. Jude struggles to forgive her for causing Mia’s death. During grief counseling she finds that she needs to forgive Lexi and let Mia go. She does eventually forgive Lexi for her actions, and, in the end, she goes to the cemetery to say goodbye to Mia. This novel should serve as a lesson to high school kids and teach them the danger of peer pressure and that the wrong decisions can and will have devastating consequences for those left behind. This novel is a must read if you need a good cry.
