Torrent Description

* Mary Shelley - Collected Works, incl. Frankenstein (37 books)
MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY (1797–1851)
was an English Romantic novelist, dramatist, and essayist. Born to radical philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft, she was raised within an intense intellectual circle that informed her unconventional and socially engaged literary career. Following a swift, scandalous elopement with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and the profound personal tragedy of losing three of her four children, Mary Shelley's writing matured to reflect themes of isolation, sympathy, and political reform.
Her most enduring legacy began with the publication of FRANKENSTEIN; OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS (1818), a masterpiece that effectively birthed the science fiction genre. By blending Gothic horror with philosophical inquiry, she explored the ethical boundaries of scientific ambition and the profound isolation of the "other." First published anonymously, a revised edition was published in 1831 under Mary Shelley's name and included significant stylistic revisions, a new preface describing the story's conception, and a more explicitly moral tone.
Other than Frankenstein, Shelley’s novelistic output demonstrated a remarkable versatility and interest in historical and apocalyptic themes. In 1823, she published VALPERGA , a meticulously researched historical romance. She followed this with THE LAST MAN (1826), a groundbreaking work of dystopian fiction set in a future world ravaged by a global plague. Her later novels, including the semi-autobiographical LODORE (1835) and the social critique FALKNER (1837), shifted toward the "silver fork" style, focusing on domestic life, education, and the legal status of women in society.
Shelley also published a significant body of shorter fiction in magazines, including well-regarded tales such as "The Mortal Immortal" (1833) and "Transformation" (1831). Her nonfiction works reflect her keen intellect and observational skills, starting with the travel narrative HISTORY OF A SIX WEEKS' TOUR (1817), written alongside her husband, and culminating in RAMBLES IN GERMANY AND ITALY (1844), which documented her later European travels.
Throughout her career, and particularly after Percy Bysshe Shelley’s death in 1822, Mary dedicated herself to editing and promoting his poetry, which helped establish his literary reputation. Her JOURNALS and LETTERS , published posthumously, serve as a raw, intimate record of her life, detailing her intellectual development and the profound grief she navigated following the deaths of her husband and three of her children. They are also vital historical resources, as they capture her candid observations on the leading figures of the Romantic movement and her tireless efforts to secure her family’s literary legacy through the mid-Victorian era.
