* David Foster Wallace - Collected Works, incl. Infinite Jest (23 books)
DAVID FOSTER WALLACE (1962–2008) was an American writer and professor who became a defining voice in contemporary American literature, celebrated for his expansive intellect and his fierce resistance to cultural alienation. Blending exhaustive research with profound philosophical inquiry, his writing dissects the paradoxes of human connection, addiction, and the overwhelming nature of 21st-century media. His signature style—characterized by labyrinthine sentences, encyclopedic vocabulary, and an extensive use of footnotes—consciously mirrored the hyper-stimulated, media-saturated reality of modern life.
His fiction career launched with the publication of the novel
THE BROOM OF THE SYSTEM (1986), an eccentric, postmodern puzzle that established his reputation for linguistic acrobatics. His magnum opus, however, is the monumental novel
INFINITE JEST (1996). Set in a dystopian, near-future North America, this sprawling, labyrinthine masterpiece examines the insidious nature of entertainment, addiction, and depression. The book became an instant cultural milestone, praised for its prophetic vision of digital addiction and the devastating cycle of human desire. His final, unfinished novel,
THE PALE KING , was published posthumously in 2011 and offers a meticulously detailed, darkly comic meditation on boredom, taxation, and the bureaucracy of the IRS. It was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
In his shorter fiction, Wallace used the medium as a laboratory for linguistic experimentation and intense psychological excavation. His debut collection,
GIRL WITH CURIOUS HAIR (1989), blended pop-culture satire with historical fiction, showcasing his early virtuosic range. He shifted toward a darker, more structurally fragmented approach with
BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN (1999). This collection utilized conceptual transcripts to fearlessly interrogate the deep-seated misogyny and moral compromises of modern masculinity. His final completed collection,
OBLIVION: STORIES (2004), pushed his formal boundaries to their absolute limits, exploring corporate dread and the agonies of the human subconscious to solidify his reputation as a master of psychological horror masked as mundane reality.
Beyond his fiction, Wallace earned immense acclaim as an essayist and journalist, possessing an uncanny ability to transform routine magazine assignments into profound cultural critiques. His first nonfiction collection,
A SUPPOSEDLY FUN THING I'LL NEVER DO AGAIN (1997), paired his biting wit with sharp-eyed observations on luxury cruise lines and professional tennis.
UP, SIMBA! (2000) is his famous piece of political journalism covering John McCain's 2000 presidential campaign. He continued his exploration of American ethical blind spots in
CONSIDER THE LOBSTER AND OTHER ESSAYS (2005), most famously in the title essay, where he challenged readers to confront the morality of boiling sentient creatures alive for entertainment. His 2005 graduation address at Kenyon College, published as a standalone volume titled
THIS IS WATER (2009), remains an iconic manual on empathy and learning how to consciously choose what to think about in the daily grind of adult life, while
BOTH FLESH AND COINAGE (2018) gathered some of his most profound late-career writings on literature and language.
In 2008, after struggling with depression for many years, Wallace died by suicide at age 46.
