The band formed in 1965 as a dance party crew at the Toronto R 'n' B club and was named, appropriately and simply, The Toronto Shotgun. After several years of low-profile work, the musicians were ready for more serious endeavors. In 1969, they hired a producer named Greg Hambleton and prepared their first demo recordings. They were lucky with the producer; he literally fell in love with the band and secured a contract for them with the label Tuesday Records. The single "Ten Pound Note" brought them great success both in Canada and abroad, and they were soon offered a tour of the States. EPs with the quintet's single were released in the UK, Germany, and Australia, and the subsequent LPs "Weighin' Heavy" (1970) and "A Better Road" (1971) sold out in 15 countries. Steel River's hectic touring career and fame continued until 1974, when they decided to call it quits. In the early 1980s, four members of the original lineup briefly reunited
