Formed in 1980, Anabis were one of many in the highly active progressive scene in Marburg. It seems however that Anabis have never been sure about themselves, or what direction they wanted to take, and all three of their albums were very different in style.
Their debut HEAVEN ON EARTH was highly derivative of Genesis, with English lyrics, long tracks and many instrumental breaks. WER WILL? contrastingly, was much more uniquely German: complex, lyrical (texts in German) and quite unusual musically. Reformed with belated recognition of their earlier albums, 1988 saw a much expanded Anabis with THEATRE and a more varied style featuring jazzy and classical elements. Thus, even the reformed Anabis never gained a style, though they were much more creative than most neo-progressives. ~ The Crack In The Cosmic Egg by Freeman bros.
