During World War II and the post-war era Tex Ritter wed his Texas roots with his Broadway background, epitomizing hillbilly music's new (and more polite) name, "Country & Western" In college he began studying cowboy ballads and American folk culture and dropped out of law school in New York in order to pursue that passion. During the 1930s, he toured the East Coast giving lectures in cowboy culture, which led to a radio and recording contract and, eventually movies. He starred in over 85 movies and became known as "America's Most Beloved Cowboy," ahead of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers.
