RA - совместный проект англичан Роберта Эндрюса и Стива Хиллмена. Оба этих артиста, представляющих лейбл Cyclops Records, доселе творили сольно, каждый в своей уникальной манере. Клавишных дел мастер Хиллмен снискал известность развернутыми научно-фантастическими опусами в диапазоне от пространной краут-стилистики до прогрессива. Что до Роберта, то его всегда тянуло к более традиционным проявлениям арт-рока, - мелодическим пасторалям в духе Стива Хэккетта. И хотя на собственных альбомах мистер Эндрюс выступает прежде всего как первоклассный гитарист, в рамках RA ему пришлось переключиться на бас, поскольку за гитарные партии здесь несет ответственность его коллега Дэвид Гроувз. Усадив за ударную стойку Дэя Риса, участники ансамбля пустились в свободное плавание по волнам инструментальной музыки.
"Wake" - очередная дань эпохе семидесятых. Модерновые элементы в саунде сведены к минимуму. Мягко рокочущие "хаммондные" пассажи маэстро Хиллмена выдают в нем убежденного поклонника Джона Лорда (Deep Purple, соло), Тийса ван Лира (Focus) и Пита Барденса (Camel, соло). Наряду с органом Стив использует синтезаторные сэмплы, копирующие звук меллотрона и муга. Напевные басовые проходы Роберта красноречиво свидетельствуют: исполняющий их человек - гитарист по призванию. Яркая лирическая подача Дэйва Гроувза напоминает Энди Лэтимера (Camel) - лишний повод для радости поклонникам симфо-прога. Вообще, ткань альбома неоднородна. Особенно это касается первой половины пластинки, пять или шесть треков которой являют чередование классически ориентированных арт-композиций с вещами, структурно близкими хард-року (однако, ходульные рефрены последних лишены свойственной жанру жесткости, из-за чего и воспринимаются, как нечто оригинальное). Прибавьте сюда факт раздельного авторства (коллективных произведений на диске немного), что, впрочем, нисколько не портит картины в целом. Вторая часть программы содержит более единообразные, утонченно-проникновенные пьесы. Дополнительный колорит вносит гостевое присутствие скрипача Фила Моргана. Настроение релиза приобретает легкий элегический оттенок. Грозовые шумы, открывающие финальный этюд "At Last", отдаляются, уступая место птичьим трелям. И на этой возвышенно-чистой ноте действо постепенно сворачивается...
