South Dakota is not a place that attracts the average surfer. It’s the land of gentle prairie hills, and the only waves are those made as the persistent wind massages the grass covered hills. But the instrumental rock ‘n roll that has become synonymous with warm beaches and palm trees is alive and well in this prairie land; a land devoid of either warm beaches or palm trees.

From high in the Northern Plains of the US comes Sonic Screwdriver, an instrumental surf band that has infected the region with a healthy dose of reverb, instrumental leads, and the dynamic percussion that drives the melodies of surf rock.

The band was formed by a group of family and friends to play at a benefit concert and local motorcycle rally. Due to the positive reaction from both the fans and the members, the band has continued to play, growing tight during the cold winters where there’s little else to do but practice, perform, and conjure up warmer days through music.

Their first album, Five Headed Surf Monster, contains many of the band’s favorite surf tunes, ranging from the all-time favorite, Pipeline, to the less well-known but more exciting song Reef Break. As the listener may notice, the album includes a diverse mix of classic surf songs as well as more modern pieces.

Sonic Screwdriver includes two guitarists, a bass player, keys, and drums. The band is intergenerational: the youngest player is fifteen years old and the senior member is fifty. Together, the music they make conveys the joy they have in playing as a team. The band has received accolades for their tight playing and high quality musicianship. Surf is back, and is warming up the northern plains.

Cosmic Storm is a guitar based album that combines an innovative blend of instrumental surf with rock, jazz, and Latin undertones. This album of original songs demonstrates the musical growth of this band of talented artists. The album starts with Carpe' Tempestas, a dynamic song that utilizes Latin themes to drive the melody played by guitarist Dillon Emo. Chasing the Storm is a driven song that was inspired by the summer storms that roll across the North American prairies. Dancing with Davy Jones is an instrumental ballad that captures the watery essence aptly described in the title. Diminished Dreams and Surf Jazz both echo jazz-based melodies that soothe and inspire the listener. Passing of the Storm is an expressive composition that musically interprets a rainstorm. Side by Side is a rare vocal piece by the band and beautifully done, with Dan Beekman's vocals soaring above the powerful and expressive instrumentation, making it a strong point on the album. In a re-imagining of a popular classic, Sonic Screwdriver's swung version of Perfidia puts an excellent new spin on this song in a way that is both innovative and pleasing to the ear. More a debut than a sophomore project, Cosmic Storm offers the listener layers of music to consider and appreciate, with each recurring playthrough presenting new depth and an edgy variety that makes this album's appeal reach far outside genre-based leanings.
