More to this band than just the hit singles

Ten years after they originally split, Boston (Massachusetts) based hard rock/funk metal outfit Extreme seem to be making a slow return to the scene with a few reunion shows (And talk of a possible new studio album) planned to take place in the coming months. Perhaps in preparation of the said reunion shows, A&M Records have finally put together Extreme’s first comprehensive D.V.D. collection, which collates all of the band’s thirteen promotional video clips, along with some rather interesting bonus extras.
Starting out the disc are the three promotional video clips from the band’s 1989 self-titled debut, which include Kid Ego (A song that vocalist Gary Cherone admits makes him cringe), Little Girls and Mutha (Don’t Wanna Go To School Today), all of which typify the hard rock scene of the late ‘90’s, with Extreme adding a slight Queen twist.
Within a year, Extreme (Who aside from Cherone consisted of guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and drummer Paul Geary) released their sophomore effort Extreme II: Pornograffitti (Released in 1990), and proved to detractors that there was more to the group than simply hairspray, flashy riffs and melodic choruses. Singles (And the associated promotional video presented here) such as Get The Funk Out and Decadence Dance displayed a little more muscle (And message) than their prior efforts, while Song For Love further indulged in their Queen influences.
But it was their biggest hit that proved to be their biggest downfall. The acoustic ballad More Than Words, and their follow up effort Hole Hearted cemented most peoples perception of the group’s sound, which was something the band were forever to battle with as the years progressed. Those who did manage to see past their big hit singles will remember their ambitious, eclectic and conceptual based (Three sided?) effort III Sides To Every Story from 1992, which presented memorable efforts such as the anti-war anthem Rest In Peace (Both the original neighbour/fence Love Thy Neighbour version, and the revised performance only edit following the lawsuit), Stop The World (Again, presented with the train version and the performance based effort) and the classic Tragic Comic.
Perhaps due to the experimentation of their previous effort, the recruitment of drummer Mike Mangini following Geary’s departure and the explosion of the grunge movement, 1995’s Waiting For The Punchline was a stripped back affair, and as a consequence both the visually disconnected Cynical and the out of focus/angular shot Hip Today show the funk metal outfit attempting to move with the times.
In regards to extras, the D.V.D. also includes an additional five live cuts filmed in the U.K. during Extreme’s heyday on their 1992 tour (Pornograffitti, Color Me Blind, Hole Hearted and the obligatory More Than Words) and 1993 jaunt (Rest In Peace).
For those out there that remember Extreme beyond More Than Words, or who happened to pick up their 1991 video Photograffitti (And who are looking for an updated version with all the extra trimmings), then look no further than Videograffitti.
