We live in a dark world. We cling to both the past and the future, but how painful we find the present most of the time. Soul and love are the very forest in which music roams its uneasy path. Most paths are incorrect and lead out to barren wastelands. How much we have to hope for now. How can beauty and the human soul really be captured by a piece of music? How long has this journey left to run? We can only guess and load up our samplers once more and prepare for battle again while we have the time. Before there is nothing left to salvage.

Monet's painting fed Debussy's music, which fed Brian Eno's atmospheres, who fed Nominal Silences world. Three easy steps. Bold brushstrokes indeed. Two London Boys searching for something. The debut album from Nominal Silence is a thing of rare beauty and thought provoking perception. A place that is at times bleak as a lunar landscape whilst in places as warm as a breath of new life. A place for the soul to think, to capture new forms and start again. Somewhere in Nominal Silences confusion there stirs a new world. A musical landscape quite divorced from anything you will have heard before. A world of new sounds and new manifestos. A place to dare to dream again. A place of the subconscious, where bridges of light are conceived and acted on. A final resting place maybe.

The album opens with the most fragile of melodies. A loan man shouts that he is lost. A distant language in a distant land. The journey has begun. Radios tune in and out of dense and complex chord structures. We are in a troubled world all right. A cross between Blade Runner and Apocalypse Now. A landscape of alienation and permanent night. But the melodies continue to grow until suddenly we reach a climax of piano work. As if we are suddenly awake in this world for the first time. Somewhere an opera singer is trying to make herself heard above street noise and confusion, but the guitar work is too beautiful for her to compete with. Dense seascapes come and go. Dogs are abandoned and roam wild here. Orchestras flirt with basslines from heaven in a modern way never heard before. The pace is slow and refined. We have to concentrate. Dull film music this is not. Then as if we have turned the wrong corner Las Higueras arrives. Trumpets and Flugelhorns throw us into a clarified vision of alien Jazz. Beautiful and shimmering until the track collapses in on itself in a fanfare of bells and gongs. David Sylvian and Harold Budd have searched for years for these textures. They should listen hard.

The closing tracks subside to fragile moments and whispers. The early strength has gone. Sparse and haunting guitars deliver us to some sort of conclusion. The funky manifesto now hidden. In years to come Nominal Silence will surely get stronger and the journeys will become yet more exotic. Questions have to be answered and promises delivered. We wait for the angels to sing once more but for now we must dare to concentrate.
