Original? No.. Enjoyable? Hell yeah! - 81%Written by stefan86 on May 29th, 2006
There are these bands that bring nothing new to the table and still find their way into my playlist. Abysmal Dawn is a typical example of this, as I have a big love affair with classical US Death Metal bands. These guys follow the oldschool Death Metal path of Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire and Suffocation. There's also some Black Metal influence present.
Even in the intro these guys kick into high gear, with some high speed semi-melodic tremolo riffing. After that, the thrashy "In The Hands of Death" gets going. There's a whole bunch of riffs here. Some are Death/Thrash, in the vein of Testament's "The Gathering". Some are more techy and aching to Suffocation. There's also a couple of Death/Black passages.
This is what makes these kind of bands so good. I can never get enough of solid Death Metal guitarwork. Every song here is filled with legions and legions of fine riffs. One thing I do complain about here is that the vocals are way too buried. They just kind of, are there. They don't really enforce the riffs, and they don't go anywhere on their own. That's still a minor beef though.
When it comes down to the production aspect of their sound, I must say it's a complete success. The guitar tone is very chunky and resembles a high-tech version of mid 90's Malevolent Creation. A tone I just happen to have a love affair with. If you're looking for something you haven't heard before, this is not it. If you're in search for solid, relentless Death Metal, grab this is in an instant.
