[spoiler="about"]
[*]Soundtracks to films by Tim Folland. The music for "Elements of Structure / Permanence" was recorded live on 5/11/97. Each Piece was improvised while watching the corresponding film.

[*]"Elements of Structure / Permanance" consists of 2 extended pieces (22- and 34-minutes each) that flow like the valleys and hills of Vermont. And it sounds just as organic as those maple-lined knobs look to our human eyes. Steady, groovy basslines (kinda like something you would find in a Can or German Oak track, but a bit more subtle) and propulsive, jazzy drums provide the backbone for guitar, piano, saxophone, woodwinds, accordion and all kinds of other things to interact, all slowly tumbling down and striding up the aforementioned hills, fading in and out, playing glorious darkened melodies, completely austere and nocturnal, slightly lugubrious, and totally and entirely original and natural.

[*]mulletguy16:

Cerberus Shoal is a weird group. Their body of work varies from slightly eccentric, kinda jazzy post-rock (1999's masterpiece Homb) to experimental schizo-rock (their latest, 2005's "The Land We All Believe In"). Over the course of their existence (they've been around since 1994), they have sort of evolved from a jazzy-ish post-rock group that could be compared to Do Make Say Think (only the Shoal is more darlessly experimental and influenced by krautrock) to a full-blown experimental indie rock group. But it's this album, "Elements of Structure / Permanance" (released in 1997) that sees them achieving their absolute fullest potential. It was conceived as an improvised soundtrack to a film by Tim Follard, all done with aid of two television monitors (to improvise along with the moving pictures), nine people, and a bunch of donated equipment.

All of these elements combine to create a lucid whole with shifting shapes and textures with excellent use of different timbres and tones to create amazing atmospheres, imagery, and tonal color. It is all very powerful to hear, and I rank it on par with the works of Talk Talk, Eyvind Kang, and Pärson Sound as far as depth, quality, and power are concerned. As one of my all-time favorites and a "desert island disc" it is so, so highly recommended.
