4xCD + hardbound book (2 pages per artist). Each song inspired by a particular plant.

http://www.heathenharvest.com/article.php?story=20040312020117586
Infernal Proteus is a dream come true. Rarely does such an offering appear in the musical world. This four disc CD compilation encompasses the contributions of forty unique artists and bands. Contributors include neofolk/neoclassical luminaries such as O Paradis, Allerseelen, Hekate, Amber Asylum, Waldteufel, In Gowan Ring, Unto Ashes and Endura. And that is just a sample from the first disc! Other well known artists from various underground genre’s also include Apoptose, Ultra, Troum, Inade, The Red King, Ah Cama-Sotz, Wolfskin, Aube, and Chaos As Shelter. If I do not have your attention now your either dead or listening to the wrong music.

What could attract such an array of artists from so many different genres and labels? A really well conceived idea. Infernal Proteus is the first “Musical Herbal.” Combining the traditional herbal (a botanical text) with the concept of using plants, flowers and trees as inspiration for musical compositions. Each of the forty featured artists was asked to contribute a song and picture of the plant they chose. Some artists also chose to contribute text in the form of lyrics or written references to these plants.

The four CD collection is accompanied by a “herbal” text. The book explains the concept of the musical herbal and catalogs the artists and songs in a convenient index. The book is divided into four “chapters.’ Each chapter refers to its companion CD by color. Each CD groups musicians who chose similar approaches to the herbal concept. Such grouping allows for the listener to have a more fluid listening experience. The Infernal Proteus comes as a glossy hardback book that holds the four CD‘s within its inner front and back cover. All of the interior pages are in full color and printed on thick glossy paper. Each artists is represented along with a full page illustration, photograph or artistic representation of their chosen plant. Each plant is accompanied by its common and botanical name as is in a traditional herbal. Infernal Proteus is a true artistic achievement and will definitely find its home on your bookshelf.

It would be impossibly tedious to introduce each artists and describe each song on this compilation of 40 bands / musicians. I will instead introduce each CD through profiling a couple of artists whose contributions really stood out for me.

The first disc in the four CD collection contains an impressive collection of musicians culled from the top most ranks of the neo-folk/neo-classical musical genre. Each of these fourteen bands and musicians contributes a different track based on different plants and flowers.

Amber Asylum appears on the first disc. They chose Kelp as their muse. Being familiar with Amber Asylum’s discography I was curious to see if they would bring something new to the composition. Utilizing droning stringed instruments in multiple layers the listener is pulled down into the cold depths of the ocean where in dwells the Kelp plant. Anabell Lee’s angelic voice sings out across the droning strings like a siren seducing sailors to steer into the rocks. The song engulfs the listener in the cold waters that give life to Kelp. Light shines from above, luminescent and bright yet so far away….

Hekate also appears on the first disc. Hekate chose the Cornflower. A much more common plant and to some a weed. Common, yet very old. The Cornflower has been used as an herbal medicine since times long ago.

Hekate surprised me on this contribution by breaking from their standard neo-folk ventures. Hekate delivers a composition that seems to be part Hekate and part Rachael Kozak. Rachael Kozak is lead lady in Hekate and in addition has a flourishing career in break beat electronic music. The Cornflower song incorporates elements of both these styles into a unique electronically infected neofolk song.

Another contribution that stood out for me was Alio Die performing a song dedicated to the Borage plant. The song is described as a “Musical meditation on Borage.” The song was recorded at Agrionco close to ’Via Francigena’ the medieval pilgrims path passing through Lunigiana - Italy. Alio Die shows great innovation by incorporating the recording location into the theme of the song. The song was recorded on location at a medieval pilgrims path. Borage has a long history of culinary use that reaches back into the middle ages. The song is composed with Drones, Sirian Pipes and Moroccan percussion. The Composition is an ethnic-ambient / ritualistic mediation on Borage. The music is simple yet very original. It has a sense of improvisation yet retains the touch of master musicians.

Disc one offers so many surprises and incredibly unique compositions that I cannot describe them all here. Expect master musicians reworking their art to reproduce individual contributions that both defy their own musical history as well as the genre in general. All of this while staying true to their traditional / classical music roots.

Disc two introduces the listener to a different realm of music. Here musicians have been gathered from various electronic / ambient musical backgrounds. The result is a sonic journey highlighted by nocturnal compositions that rise and fall from the void. Readers may recognize artists such as Inade, Apoptose, Ultra and Troum. Fresh blood is offered as well by artists Coleclough & Hill, S. Roden, Y Dauby, and Kern and Van Pelt.

Apoptose opens the second CD with a composition inspired by the great Oak tree. Composed of deep rumbling bass, bird songs, industrial drones, rumbling thunder and string arrangements the song is dense. Invoking a sense of the elemental and nocturnal entwined Apoptose delivers a song as powerful as one would expect from this reputed artist. The song is a devouring collage that invokes the image of a might Oak standing firm against a thunderous lightening storm. You hear the sound of birds seeking refuge in the giant limbs as the storm batters the tree. A great song that really pays tribute to the strength and spiritual heritage of the Oak tree.

Coleclough & Hill also explore recording location as an element of conceptualization in their song for the Beech tree. The music for this composition was recorded in a Beech grove North West of London in Chilton Hills. The song is composed of sparkling electronica and deep resonating bass drones. The music gently ebbs and flows in a most hypnotic cycle. Movement is conveyed through slight shifts in tone, pitch, and volume of different musical elements. The song is extremely minimalist and pleasantly experimental. The music invoked a sense of stillness and slow growth. A remembrance of this great tree and a journey into its long life cycle.

Israfel In Necropolis delivered a real jolt with their performance of “The Great Sycamore.” Israfel In Necropolis utilize industrial and ritual-ambient elements in looped sequences to create an atmosphere of haunting emptiness. A female singer penetrates the darkness with a strong angelic voice. Her vocal delivery infects the song with a feeling of witchcraft and ancient times. She sings from a place of power and authority. Closing my eyes I could see an ancient Pagan priestess conducted the sacred rights of the Sycamore. Not since the Moon Lay Hidden Beneath A cloud have I heard such a powerful woman sing. Israfel In Necropolis deliver a performance worthy of the sacred Sycamore Tree.

The third CD in the Infernal Proteus collection follows the lead of the previous two by taking the listener on a new sonic journey. The third CD wakes up the listener from the previous somatic pulsation of the second CD and enlivens things with a mixture of indefinable songs and interesting plants. I noticed that artists on this CD had a tendency towards plants that had intoxicating properties. A familiar subject for many of us. Among the artists that appear are Red King, Numinosum, JH Craban, Wolfskin, Ah Cama-Sotz, Nerthiagh, Mnortham and Baradelan.

The CD opens with Red King performing a very long and complex neo-classical/metal rock opera inspired by the Opium Poppy. The song tells of the despair associated with self medicating ones misery with Heroin. The music is a dark anthem filled with dark string arrangements and viscous guitars. A deep growling voice rises out of the darkness to growl out lyrics full of despair. The musical and overall delivery is very dramatic and impressive. A great representation of this most seductive and quite often abused plant.

Ah Cama-Sotz contributes a musical score dedicated to the Morning Glory. Far from focusing on the plants beauty the song is rather an industrial/ambient masterpiece of devastating darkness. The song opens with dark suffocating electronics that rise in a dense swirling mass out of the abyss. The track drops straight off the edge and plummets the listener into a dark world of moody electronics that evolve from some nightmarish world. Just as you feel yourself giving into the pulsating stew of electronics a massive industrial rhythm explodes across the sound field. The rhythm is almost subsonic and is absolutely apocalyptic. The song picks up speed and movement as the crushing beat pounds its way through the densely constructed dark ambience. This song is perhaps the darkest and most powerful piece in the collection. This song represents Ah Cama-Sotz at their best. Delivering ritual dark-ambient with the touch of masters.

Baradelan is also worth mentioning amongst this talented lineup. Using unconventional means to produce a most intriguing track. Baradelan chose Bonsai as his muse. Baradelan used four speakers with microphones in a small room to create a feedback field. The original sound sources where collected by physically moving within the sound field created by the speakers and recording the feedback that resulted.. These source recordings where then manipulated electronically to compose the song. The theme of the music is imprisonment both mentally and physically. After researching the Bonsai tradition Baradelan became interested in the relationship between the tree and the wire frame that is constructed around the plant to control its growth. The music is anything but easy listening as the artists states. The track itself is a collage of approaches and styles that slowly evolves in an improvisational manner. Very experimental and difficult to describe as one might imagine.

The final disc in this four disc series saves the most challenging music for last. Disc four groups together musicians that can most easily be generalized into the noise music category. Many a reader not familiar with the noise genre might be cringing right now. You can stop. Disc four is a great introduction to noise music for neophytes and a refreshing breathe of new air for seasoned veterans of this genre. To better understand noise in this context simply think of improvisational jazz. Now replace those traditional jazz instruments with any variety of sounds/noises and abandon any known standard song structure. Focus on innovation, creativity and improvisation and you have a fair description of the journey offered in disc four.

Mania opens the fourth disc with a tribute to the Poison Ivy plant. A familiar plant many of us know well. Mania compose an agitated piece of music that communicates the irritant quality of the Poison Ivy plant. Sounds range from scratching, scraping, rhythmic noise, oscillating electronics, and hissing sounds. The composition is deliberately schizoid and unsettled. It easily brings to mind all the discomfort and irritation we associate with poison ivy and its itchy rash.

Lotus Eaters cover the Marijuana plant in an epic song of improvised electronica/noise. The song begins with contrasting pitched drones that introduce a transcendental feeling. For a short time I thought the song was all about the high of the plant. This all changes as a high pitch drone begins to dominate the music and the pace picks up significantly. Very squeaky and harsh sound manipulations infiltrate the song and drive the composition into another realm. Manipulated static rushes in over the top and suddenly I realize the song is communicating the rush of THC through the lungs and blood and into the brain. The music takes another turn in what I assumed to be the glow of intoxication. Here guitar weaves in and out of squeaky ambient sound structures for the remainder of the song. The pace ebbs and the listener is brought down from the rush and delivered into the warm drone of being stoned.

Hu delivers further innovation and creativity in thought and composition through a song dedicated to Tea. The author approached the composition with spiritual intentions expressed in this excerpt from the Infernal Proteus “Cryptoacoustics. The concept of Cryptoacoustics is based on the fact that, since every material object accumulates spiritual energy during its lifetime, this energy can be extracted from the object. When the object is old and has a long history, you can force it to give away some spiritual energy it absorbed. When you produce sound with the object, spiritual energy uses the sound as a carrier; just like radio transmissions when radio waves are used as a carrier for sound. Cryptoacoustics is directly connected to shamanism when the sound of the object is used as a carrier for good and evil spirits. Which means, Cryptoacoustics is not music. It is not even art. Cryptoacoustics is a mystical experience.” All sounds in the song where composed with a violin bow and a 2kg piece of pressed black tea. The result is a strange and fascinating song composed of manipulated sounds. The bow can actually be detected as an instrument of creation in many of the restructured sounds. The song itself was very bizarre! I expected allot of crunching and rattling sounds. Hu has instead creating a dense soundscape of nearly indescribable sounds in an intriguing sound collage. While listening to the music I began to imagine an analogy. I think if you went to an international zoo and recorded field recordings. Take those recordings and play them backwards at varying speeds and layer the results into a linear song. That is as close as I can get to describing this intriguing song.

Infernal Proteus in an invaluable addition to your music collection. Having created such an interesting concept and having attracted so many talented artists the Ajna Offensive has definitely proven themselves worthy of our attention. Faeries who actively pursue new and innovative music have to have this CD collection. Fairies who are new to these musical genres will also find this to be an affordable way to introduce yourself to a wide variety of talented and diverse musicians. Being a gardener and plant lover I found this collection to be a fascinating way to share my plant fascination with many of the musicians I listen to regularly. Any faeries with an interest in plants and plant lore will most likely find this an interesting and provoking release. I encourage all of you to get your copies while they are available. Infernal Proteus stands out as a milestone of conceptual creativity and thoughtful production.

Faeries looking for short musical scores for ritual purposes will find a vast and fertile sonic cornucopia inside this collection as well. Most every song in the collection transported me to unknown worlds of sound and thought. Properly approached a Faerie could extract music from this collection for any number of spiritual practices including deep trance, hypnosis, visualization, sacrament accompaniment and invocation. A creative Faerie might even use Mania’s Poison Ivy to focus some unpleasant thoughts on a current adversary. The uses are as vast as your imagination.
