Первый альбом группы был настолько же сильно раскритикован, насколько второй, Spirit Animal (2009), был встречен с востогами. Альбом напичкан мощной и насыщенной спейс-музыкой, сложными мелодическими и ритмическими рисунками, наполнен драматизмом и космической атмосферой. Рекомендуется всем любителям сложного и необычного инструментального/экспериментального прога.

Guide Review - Zombi '2009 'Spirit Animal'

Zombi isn’t so much metal as it is a transcendental synth rock expedition with modes of Air, Yes, The Goblins, Gary Wright, Genesis, Rush and Tangerine Dream plus Alan Howarth and John Carpenter soundtracks. As of their latest endeavor Spirit Animal, Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra have turned the equivalent of a lost Dario Argento score into something of deeper magnitude.

It’s hard to not parallel Zombi with 2112 Rush as well as Duke era Genesis, particularly on “Earthly Powers,” which pounds out bleeding synth tones before changing dynamics. Ditto for the closing marathon of “Through Time,” which is astounding to hear literally unravel by the minute; the deeper it thrums along the low end synth and bass drives, the sooner it yields high notes swooning in pensive fashion.

What’s particularly awesome is how layered the title track gets after a couple warm-up minutes of knify tempos before looping through a Howard Faltermeyer “Axel F” thread of singular, echoing key sequences. Rounding out the second half is a heavily-detailed mix of synth spookiness and bass-heavy prog.

What Zombi has a terrific knack for is creating ambient keyboard music that not even Kraftwerk could’ve foreseen possible. Sounding like The Who’s “Eminence Front” in a merge with a John Carpenter popcorn flick on “Cosmic Powers,” the sensation is like drifting into an eighties Tron matrix. The fleeting tribal drums in the final stanza display sheer confidence to move this sound forward, as is Steve Moore’s decision to fuse guitars into Zombi’s creative flux.

Less reliant on the electro pulse and moving slightly towards more organic pastures, the end result is an album as equally satisfying as Cosmos and Surface to Air, if not just a hair more so since Zombi has now perfected its superbly-detailed synth art.
