With a lively and extremely dynamic mixture of blues, jazz, rock, hard rock and progressive music based on the 70’s Swedish scene, and then adding it a psychedelic touch and a Gentle Giantish sense of complex architecture, this young Swedish band Nevarllajf is just now releasing their debut album. And what an entrée this is!
With Klusterfloristen,this band proposes a truly challenge concept. The aforementioned mixture of styles is done in a very intricate and unique way, avoiding any type of clichés that there could be. The music here is very personal and with a distinctive signature. It sounds like a Belgium RIO band playing 70’s Swedish progressive, which may sound kind of strange to you, but it is exactly how I am able to best characterize this band. This is an all instrumental band that not only captures the essence of Gentle Giant most complex constructions, but (among other things) adds it with a contemporary sound and some hard rock riffs that makes it all sound bizarre and hard-to-get.
It seems to me that the band may have started being a more jazz fusion outfit and then started working on the transition of that base to the more progressive aesthetics. This is particularly noticeable in the almost free-fusion track Ove Och Det Tjockaste Sminket in which they freely explore that transition from a more pure sort of jazz into something that comes closer to the experimental prog. They also show a sense of heaviness everytime they incorporate powerful guitars, even if they only do it rarely and only to emphasize a more aggressive note or two.
Besides all of that, this band is unbelievably creative and experimental, from start to finish of the album. Never repetitive, never accommodated to a common genre or instrumental approach. They are simply presenting ideas, many of them, in a systematic yet chaotic way…
The band is capable of presenting a notable sense of purpose, an exquisite interplay and a musical knowledge that simply has to be praised.
This is some difficult stuff indeed. Something that only the more experimental sorts of progheads will fully enjoy. This said, I would not recommend this album to pure symphonic or neo-prog lovers, but those who like fusion or the more experimental, shifting and complex side of things will undoubtedly have a blast of fun with this album. It is inventive, fresh and with a very good mood feel.
