Over eight years, Yellow6 – the solo project of the multi-talented Jon Attwood, a guitarist based in Leicestershire, UK – has rapidly grown into one of the most prolific and loved artists in the music sub-strata known as ambient, dreampop and post-rock.

Rightly regarded as one of best artists in these genres, Yellow6 has released a consistently stunning range of material on an array of over 20 international independent labels, including Enraptured Records, Ochre Records, Awkward Silence Recordings, Rocket Racer, and Make Mine Music. In total, since 1998, Yellow6 has released five full-length albums, twelve mini-albums and EPs, eight singles, five live albums, one remix album, and eighteen compilation tracks. ‘The Beautiful Season Has Past’, a compilation of Yellow6’s singles, compilation tracks and unreleased material on RROOPP, brings this extraordinary tally to 50 releases.

Not only is this potent testimony to Yellow6’s astonishing popularity and demand from both a dedicated fan base and independent labels around the globe, but also symbolic of Yellow6’s place at the epicentre of the independent music counterculture. ‘The Beautiful Season Has Past’ represents a door into another world, a tranquil place of the imagination, where a love of music takes preference over slick commercialism and music business realpolitik.

In these melodic and beautiful soundscapes chiming arpeggios of guitar echo beneath shimmering fuzz, and crepuscular polyphonic drones ebb and flow between tasteful touches of electronic percussion. The perfect antidote and antithesis to predictable pop song structures, the work of Yellow6 is a subtle charging of the emotions, conjuring euphoric sensations, pensive moods and swathes of atmospheric ambience. Beneath the world of disposable pop, this epic music is the soundtrack to your thoughts.

Of the 40 tracks on ‘The Beautiful Season Has Past’, 10 are previously unreleased, 24 are out of print, deleted or otherwise unavailable, and three more have never before been released on CD. The package includes comprehensive liner notes, carefully detailing each track’s original release along with other salient details. The title makes a grammatical pun on a French review of the fourth Yellow6 LP, ‘Disappear Here’. The reviewer noted that “la belle saison est derrière”, inferring that he preferred Yellow6’s earlier work; ‘The Beautiful Season Has Past’ suggests that Yellow6’s journey beneath the surface of our lives is still just beginning.
