Rather than being a full opera, "Sibaris" is a brief "acte de ballet", a light divertissement written for the King and Court at the royal hunting lodge at Fontainebleau in 1753. Rameau, at the summit of his popularity, was charged with producing shorter pieces with singing and dancing as after-dinner entertainment. Understandably, this work is less formal and lighter in tone than his famous tragedie lyrique operas, which listeners both then and now would be more familiar. But "Sibaris" was considered a great success at its opening performances, and Rameau brought it back, in slightly altered form, four years later.

The brief plot concerns an actual place, the old Greek city-colony of Sybaris, located in ancient Italy (on the Gulf of Tarentum). Sybaris was known in the Greek world for two things: 1) Fun loving, and 2) Success at the Olympic Games. In Rameau's mythological story (as set down by his librettist, the French poet Marmontel), the Sybarites have just crowned their new queen, Hersilde. She immediately enacts new laws which command pleasure, happiness, and love-making all around (the source, of course, of our modern use of the term "sybarite"). However, Sybaris's neighbor is the kingdom of Croton (another actual place, the modern-day Crotone), whose inhabitants are warlike and bloodthirsty. The agressive King of Croton, Astole, seeks to invade Sybaris, but is enraged to discover that the happy-go-lucky Sybarites can't be bothered to defend their own borders. But by the end he has mellowed--and succumbed to Hersilde's charms, and her philosophy of pleasure.

"Sibaris" has a loose, more varied structure than the Rameau operas, but also much less memorable music. Historically-informed-performance is possible here with great precision, since French archives list the exact numbers and names of performers at the premiere at Fountainebleau on November the 13th, 1753. The modern performers on this disc, Le Concert de H'ostel Dieu, as directed by Frank-Emmanuel Comte, do a satisfactory job, but perhaps not at the very highest level.

One imagines that the work's message on the pleasures of love resonated with the by-then older Louis XV--who had led a life populated by mistresses--but at the time he was more focused on bellicose matters: the very next year he took France into the Seven Years' War.
