Put aside that tequila, get rid of ‘The Bros’; this is just Brant Bjork on his own. After a sabbatical year in Barcelona he moved back to Southern California and was in the mood for grooving a little harder than before. Although this is not quite true, because the recordings for this album took place in the winter of 2005, and were originally known as ‘The New Jersey Sessions’. Also the album title is a nod to the past and comes from a quote from Josh Homme when he’s talking about the split-up of Kyuss. And although this album sounds a little darker than Brants last albums, don’t expect raw down-tuned Kuyss metal, because the air is still filled with neo-psychedelics and dust clouds from the beards of ZZ Top.
It’s just a tiny bit more spiced up, powerful and heavy. That doesn’t mean it’s any better or worse than before, not even significant different; the sunny laidback stoner grooves are simply joined by little dark clouds. Best example is the opening song ‘Lion One’, an epos of more than ten minutes with a hell of an airy, but swampy-undertoned stoner riff, drowned in blues and nonchalance. Every band will keep such a song for the finale of the album, but not Brant, he starts with it. True… he also ends with it, because the equally long and lazy ‘Locked And Loaded’ is the enjoyable finale of the record. With his new record label Low Desert Punk (this album is the very first release) he also made a very appropriate description of his sound. It’s no secret that the spirits of Phil Lynott, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix have found their homes inside Brants head. Three sedated spirits that is, because you still won’t hear one single drop of sweat on this album. Evil Dr. Smith diagnoses: 80/100
