End of status report

Death metal is one of those genres we all appreciate because deep inside, whether or not we want to admit it, we hate each other and would like to see mankind die in a fiery apocalypse. It’s just that people are assholes and we are all tired of assholes ruling the world while also knowing we cannot do a damn thing about it. Nothing. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Except fantasize about their demise in various ways. The problem with death metal, in general, is that so many of us wear the hate, it’s a crowded space. How do you stand out in the death metal scene? Well, you have to be creative. Duh. You have to write great songs consistently. Most of all, you need to be unique.
It turns out Ageless Oblivion have most of this down, but not all. Their debut, Temples Of Transcendent Evolution, is a respectable effort with many strengths. However, I’m just not convinced they are memorable enough to stand out any more than most other modern death metal acts. That doesn’t meant I didn’t like it. In fact, I quite like this album.
The album is almost an EP with seven tracks plus a fancy-pants intro of ambient noise. Eight tracks is not enough sustain my metal appetite. I really felt like I wanted more from the band. Ageless Oblivion could have added at least two more tracks. I like my albums fat, especially when most of what I’m hearing is good.
But enough of that negative shit. Ageless Oblivion are technically proficient at your standard laying to waste all of humanity. Forests are wiped out, bodies of water burn, and populations turn to ashes. Temples of Transcendent Evolution passes all of those tests in our labs. There are plenty of mega-riffs and double bass to satisfy every tortured soul. This is because, according to their press release, the band’s members have roots from the band, Arkane. They cite such influences as Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, and Akercocke. Solid.
Thematically, Ageless Oblivion focus on more epic fantasy stories. They are an obvious choice for late night RPG sessions with your other dateless friends. But more than that, the band creates an atmosphere that is dark, dangerous, and also enticing. “Drone of the Nychomist” is probably my favorite track from the album just because of the incredible guitar work and interesting hooks.
One thing I particularly enjoyed about this album was low-end spectrum captured in the recording. You have not lived until you pimp your ride and blast this album through an MTX Jackhammer subwoofer. I haven’t heard such great bass thump from a metal album in a long time. And keep this in mind: I just have the record company’s MP3s. I can’t imagine how good this sounds lossless. I get chills just thinking about it.
There are so many death metal bands out there. Ageless Oblivion has the potential to stand out, but they aren’t quite there yet. They need a little more variety in their song structures (think: Revocation or Godslave) as well as a little polish in their song writing. However, I will give them credit: they created one hell of a debut. More please.
