Some black metal bands transcend the boundaries of the genre while still remaining firmly and without a doubt, black metal. Neither descending into ridiculous "extreme" metal, nor falling under the heading of keyboard-laden, drippy goth metal, Ancient Plague play unblack metal that is entirely experimental and wandering in nature.

I'm not going to lie - this is strange music, without any sense of coherency. While "Death By a Thousand Wounds" is pretty traditional depressive black metal in the vein of Xasthur (think "The Funeral of Being"), other tracks deviate almost entirely from any traditional black metal sound while still keeping the atmosphere so inherent to good black metal. Especially of note here is the heart-wrenching spoken word and piano of "Litany of Scars I", almost reminiscent of the trailing end of Carpathian Forest's "Nostalgia". There are no words to describe the slow falling beauty of this song.

Other tracks span a gamut of sounds, and the best I can do is describe this as ambient/depressive unblack metal. How on earth these guys are labeled as symphonic "black" metal on here is beyond me - there is nothing symphonic on here, nor on their older releases. It's pure depressive and experimental black metal played with a real ear for the right sounds.

There's enough here to satisfy the die-hard black metal fan of course - the pulverizing guitars of "Animus", the noise-freakouts and reptilian guitars of "Litany of Scars II" more than attest to this. But it is the willingness to experiment with dark ambient sounds here that makes the album stand out so much from other bands within this kind of subgenre of black metal. True, Xasthur can be ferociously depressing at times, but his droning tirades can become a bit tiresome. Ancient Plague changes it up enough to make it interesting, and in the end, conjure up a style of experimental black metal all their own.

An acquired taste, but if it rings true for you, get it now.
