CHÂLICE were founded in the early Nineties. The direction that Gino Naschke, Oliver Scheer, Steve Lagleder, Michael Mehl and their erstwhile keyboarder took from the beginning was grooving melodic metal with international appeal. The band came to the publics attention for the first time on a rock sampler in 1993, playing with Steve Lukather (Toto), Asia, Virgin Steele and Alannah Miles in spring 1994, and releasing their debut, In Wonderland, one year later. Their second album, Persistence Of Time, was recorded in autumn 1996 and praised profusely by magazines such as Rock Hard (nice phat sound), Metal Hammer (CHÂLICE have developed into an independent act that always hits the golden mean at the interface of prog rock and straight US metal), Hard Line (fantastic, extremely driving and transparent production) or Rock City (a breathtaking, exciting atmosphere in these songs). The band toured with Saga in May 1998, and then with Uriah Heep and Nazareth starting November, before going on to record their third album, Digital Boulevard.

This Digital Boulevard is the following album (second one?) of the excellent Persistence Of Time. Unfortunately (or fortunately will say the die-hard fans) it is the "exact" continuation of the first LP. They didn't improve that much, played a "joker" card for this one and highlighted the most typical young band's problem: confirm the "first performance".

There are two things I really like with this band. 1) the singer, who has a Vince Neil voice and 2) their "prog" music approach. As you know I am not a mega fan of prog metal (this doesn't mean I am running the opposite way once I see a prog record), but Chalice is the kind of band I can hear without thinking it is "prog" metal. The guitar is very present and Chalice try always to astonished the listener.

This Digital Boulevard is still better than many other progressive releases nowadays, but I expected it to be a bit better compare to their first record, with more passion. Maybe the first one was too "accomplished" for a first shot. A try for all fans of Shadow Gallery.
