Disappears is made up of some Chicago scene veterans-- Brian Case of garage-rock favorites the Ponys as well as several members of the defunct post-rock band Boas. Their music combines elements of both groups, but it nearly became a casualty of the industry's current financial mess. Disappears were the very last act signed to Touch and Go before the label shut down, and as a result, their debut, Lux, was almost lost in the shuffle. Luckily they were eventually scooped up by Kranky, and though their style differs considerably from the experimental and ambient that label is known for, it seems a good fit for Disappears' dense and foreboding sound.

Disappears' sound is a pared-down, drone-heavy mixture of Velvet Underground scuzz, garage-rock energy, and krautrock propulsion. It may not feel like the most unique approach, but, importantly, the band seems aware of that. Part of Disappears' appeal is that they've chosen to work within a set of stylistic and sonic limitations, where vocals and instrumentation are stripped back to their most essential. It's more about minimalism and mastering the basics than making something brand-new.

It works because Disappears keep things tight; even though there's heaviness and repetition in these tracks, usually they're about three minutes long. "Gone Completely" is a killer opener, a rush of fuzz-laden guitars and simple, severe drumming. On this track and throughout the album, frontman Case's vocals are buried in the mix just right-- his delivery is kind of a Britt Daniel-meets-Iggy Pop sing-speak-- and clouded in the feedback his words sound more powerful, like they're trying to escape. The band mostly finds a comfortable zone and rides it, but each track tweaks the formula just so, and the mood stays jet-black dark throughout.

Things do start to feel a bit same-y toward the end of the record. On "Little Ghost" and "New Cross", it sounds like the band is revisiting ideas they touched on earlier. But when a group is working in such tight confines, some overlap is natural. That the goal here is intentionally limited ultimately works for and against Disappears-- they achieve the sound they want, and it does sound good, but it's hard to think of Lux as much more than that, because the components are so familiar. Still, that they're able to make these well-worn rock tropes feel quite so menacing after all this time is an achievement in its own right.

On their second full-length, Chicago's Disappears have gotten more Zen. Where their mix of Velvet Underground chug and krautrock groove on 2010 debut Lux was pretty melodic, on Guider they're more interested in being hypnotic. They've embraced repetition, using it as an end of its own rather than a way to find hooks. They do offer lots to latch onto-- memorable riffs abound, and revving tempos propel the tunes like a car stuck in 5th gear. But they sound more into straight lines than catchy arcs, more into the moment than what came before.

The recording details confirm that immediacy. According to Kranky's press release, all but one track is a first take. In fact, Disappears literally erased the past, recording over tapes originally used for the Lux sessions. Still, for an album so in-the-moment and so short-- it lasts only 30 minutes, and half is taken up by closer "Revisiting"-- Guider doesn't fly by. All the repetition distorts the sense of time, as if each groove had begun before tape rolled and continued to churn past the end.

That aligns Disappears with another band that can turn one riff into an eternal swing, San Francisco's Wooden Shjips. Both also draw openly on classic influences-- Disappears' twitter bio is "Music for Record Collectors"-- and this time around the common denominator is Spacemen 3. That group's rumbling bass, reflective guitar, and flattened vocals spring up in the quiet/loud drama of "Not Romantic", the stair-climbing "Superstition", and the shivering riffs of "Halo". But Spacemen 3 weren't unique-- they borrowed as much from Suicide and the MC5 as Disappears borrow from them-- and their influence on Guider produces something that can't simply be called a copy.

A more valid criticism would be that heavy influence makes Guider less able to transcend genre than the more openly catchy Lux. For me, the band makes up for that deficit in sheer magnetic energy, which isn't easy to wrangle from such a well-worn style. That energy is plentiful enough that Disappears may yet make a record that captures both true believers and recent converts equally.

When Disappears took shelter in the 15-minute long "Revisiting" at the end of last year's Guider, it felt like they were on the cusp of pushing their music into an audacious new space. There were certainly plenty of associations that could be drawn between that song and other artists-- it fed off an unholy amalgam of the Stooges' grit, the blissful repetition of Can, the planet-sized riffing of Loop. But there was poise to it, a sense of all those elements running off one another to create a glorious noise, mapped out in a place you could retreat to and get lost in for days at a time. The touring undertaken to promote Guider brought Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley into the Chicago-based band's fold-- a natural fit for the eternally cyclical guitar lines singer Brian Case and Jonathan Van Herik were obsessing over at the time. Shelley returns on Pre Language, now a fully paid-up member of the band, on the most concise account of Disappears' music to date.

Instead of acting as a jumping-off point to something new, "Revisiting" has been treated as a dead end, a place where the group's fixation on repetition was shoved out to its natural brink. It's not altogether surprising to find Disappears acting this way. There was a strong shift in style between their 2010 debut, Lux, and Guider, from sweet-toothed guitar pop to the nihilistic Detroit 1969 abandon of tracks like "Halo". Pre Language is a further modification, with Case clearly keen to show off his Anglophile tendencies by channeling the Fall's Mark E. Smith on a number of songs ("Replicate", "Fear of Darkness"). Strangely, considering Shelley's involvement, there's also a whiff of 1990s alt-rock also-rans, the kind of acts that trailed in Sonic Youth's wake. "All Gone White" could be a track by long-forgotten St. Johnny, one of the many eyebrow-raising recipients of a major deal (at DGC) during the storied post-grunge feeding frenzy.

That same fate isn't likely to befall Disappears any time soon, but on Pre Language they are producing their most commercial work to date. When it peaks, on the forceful "Hibernation Sickness" and through the shivery guitars of "Brother Joliene", there's a natural buoyancy at work, with the band's psych impulses, pop flair, and scratchy guitar passages all working in tandem. But too often it slides into unremarkable sludge, making it feel like the blown-open sound and ambition of Guider isn't being capitalized on. "Minor Patterns" resembles an inconsequential Dandy Warhols album track when the chorus rolls in, wandering aimlessly in a haze of shoegazery fuzz. Even tracks that lean back into Disappears' trusted framework of repetition don't find the same kind of purpose as before, with "Love Drug" trudging aimlessly in place for much of its duration.

The fundamental difference between Pre Language and its predecessor is a sense of identity, that ability to turn obvious touchstones inside-out to land in a place easily defined as Disappears' own territory. This album feels more like a series of genre exercises, a place in which they occasionally work up a palpable tension, but never enough to make this more than an adequate diversion from the resources they're obviously sourcing. It's possible that "Revisiting" was so monolithic in size that it became something from which Disappears needed to make a hasty retreat, fearing such an exercise couldn't be equaled. There would certainly be no point in repeating something like that again. But there's heightened aspiration there, a sense of loosening the band's tightly wound sound to see where it would take them, bringing them to a place Pre Language doesn't arrive at often enough.

Era is the fourth annual report from Chicago powerhouse quartet Disappears. It was formed during the gloom of the Chicago winter at Electrical Audio by now regular foil John Congleton.

Insular and dark, the album sees the band further refining their love of dub, minimalism and repetition into their most original and stark set yet.

It harks back to the early 80ʻs post punk period, when almost anything seemed possible with the classic two guitar, bass and drums lineup, and exploration and expansion of what could be done with these elements was at the fore.

Dueling wiry and squalling guitars lead the way while a lockdown rhythm section provides the perpetual forward motion.

Era is Disappears at their most abrasive, contemplative, and paranoid – itʼs the sound of the void looking back.
