Certainly, we all love Gene and the rest at JazzLegends.com, but it is about time that we offered something from another true master, this one of a different style and era, Elvin Jones. There hasn't been much out there on Elvin other than the programs that have been on the market for years. We wanted to wait until we found something extraordinary and we believe we have. "Elvin Jones: A Love Supreme," is a 1988 Coltrane tribute concert, recorded in Japan with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, Sonny Fortune on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano and Richard Davis on bass. Superbly filmed and recorded, this clocks in at almost two hours, and is the most "accessible" example of latter-day Elvin we've found, in that the compositions include "Body and Soul," "I Want to Talk About You," a couple of swinging blues, and the title tune. This is a great, great intro to Elvin, perfect for those who want to learn just why he was a legend.

Элвин Джонс родился в 1927 году в Понтиаке, штат Мичиган, и был младшим ребёнком в семье из десяти детей. Элвин — младший брат пианиста Хэнка Джонса и трубача Тэда Джонса — дебютировал в 1952 в Детройте, в 1955 вошел в оркестр Чарльза Мингуса и в следующем году в Нью-Йорке присоединился к квинтету Пеппера Адамса—Дональда Бёрда.
Прославился в 60-е годы как участник квартета Джона Колтрейна. Разработал новый исполнительский метод, при котором ударные не столько отмечали доли такта, сколько создавали плотную звуковую фактуру со свободными внутренними линиями, образующими контрапункт с солирующими инструментами. В квартете Джона Колтрейна играл в 1960–65, записав такие известные альбомы, как My Favorite Things (1960), Africa/Brass (1961), Life At The Village Vanguard (1962), Coltrane Plays The Blues (1962), Coltrane (1962), Duke Ellington And John Coltrane (1962), Ballads (1962), Impressions (1963), Coltrane’s Sound (1963), A Love Supreme (1965) и другие. После ухода из квартета поехал на гастроли в Европу с Дюком Эллингтоном (1966), в Нью-Йорке работал с Тони Скоттом, в дальнейшем собирал разные ансамбли для самых неожиданных проектов. С ним сотрудничали Джо Фаррел, Джордж Коулмен, Дэйв Либмен, Маккой Тайнер, Доллар Бранд, Ричард Дэвис, Джимми Харрисон и многие другие. Основная идея Джонса сводилась к тому, чтобы утвердить ударные в качестве не только равноправных инструментов в ансамбле, но также в роли лидирующих, определяющих характер музыкальной ткани. В 1979 выпустил документальный фильм "Элвин Джонс — необычный барабанщик". В 90-е годы выступал на многих американских и европейских фестивалях, а также в Японии с группой Elvin Jones And Jazz Machine.
Скончался Джонс в 2004 году от сердечной недостаточности в возрасте 76 лет.
