Коллектив Mutilator считается одним из самых ярких представителей бразильской метал-сцены 80-х годов наряду с Sepultura, Sarcofago, Holocausto и др. Группа начала свою разрушительную деятельность в 1985 году под названием Desaster, впрочем, коллектив уже в скором времени был переименован в Mutilator. В 1986 году ребята записывают два демо - "Bloodstorm" и "Grave Desecration", в том же году выходит сплит "Warfare Noise I" с Chakal, Sarcofago и Holocausto.

В 1987 увидел свет дебютный диск бразильцев, "Immortal Force", представлявший собой угарный Death/Thrash Metal со значительным влиянием Slayer, Possessed и Bathory.

В 1988 году, уже в обновленном составе, группа записала свой второй по счету альбом, "Into the Strange", на котором был сделан значительный уклон в сторону трэш-метала, музыка коллектива стала более мелодичной, на диске присутствовали две инструментальные композиции.

Коллектив распался в 1989 или 1990 году из-за ухода "Magoo" - основного композитора группы, позднее он сформировал другую группу - Chemako.

Спустя некоторое время Mutilator пытались воссоединиться, но со смертью в 1997 году главного идейного вдохновителя коллектива - Alexander "Magoo", это стало уже невозможным...

Mutilator was one of the most representative bands of the Brazilian Heavy Metal scene in the 80's and 90's. The band released only two LPs, but these two albums are still considered true references for all who listen to heavy music in the world.

The band started out in 1985, using the name Desaster. When Silvio SDN came in, they renamed the band as Mutilator. The first demo was recorded, and it took them to the Warfare Noise I compilation, released in 1986, which also featured the bands Chakal, Sarcofago and Holocausto. This was a very important compilation for the promotion of the Heavy Metal scene of the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais (In Belo Horizonte city), who had already yielded such bands as Sepultura and Overdose.

In 1987, Silvio SDN left the band. The band then recorded its first LP, "Immortal Force", in which they produced a vigorous Death/Thrash Metal, deeply influenced by Slayer, Possessed and Bathory. A very fast "blast-beat" drumming and fast guitar riffing gave to Mutilator a special place in the diversificated brazilian scene. And also showed the world its fury. The album, which is considered a classic release today, has been fully remastered, and contains new artwork and the songs from the band’s first demo, previously released only in the LP Lost Tapes of Cogumelo, in 1990.

In 1988, the band recorded the LP "Into the Strange", with a different line-up, which headed towards the Thrash Metal style. Most worked songs, unplugged moments and two instrumental tracks. Now the band was infinitly superior than a lot of other bands arround the world. Though less known than its predecessor, Into the Strange is an important document when it comes to the evolution of Brazilian heavy metal. Both Mutilator albums serve as strong statements of a style that would be refined in later Brazilian Metal albums, such as Sepultura’s seminal Beneath the Remains.

The band split-up in 1989 or 1990, because of the departure of Magoo ,the main compositor. Magoo formed a new band, called Chemako, with other influences beyond rock and metal.
Magoo unhapply died in 1997, before this tragedy, Mutilator was trying a reunion. His death killed Mutilator too, and "killed" a lot of fans arround the world.

The demo is listed as being from 1985 on the bootleg. The first 3 versions of "Mutilator" here are played with a short intro piece that's not on the "Immortal Force" version. All live tracks have breaks between them.

Festival da Morte was a show with Vulcano, Chakal, and Guerrilha. The Vulcano '86 DVD footage is taken from this gig. Sгo Paulo is mentioned in the stage banter a lot (I hear Minas Gerais mentioned later in the show too, though that's where the band are from), so I'm wondering if the location is really correct. Actually the song introductions are quite long, so it would be interesting to know what's being said from someone who knows Portuguese.

The first set of live tracks are definitely the best in quality. I would guess this show is the one on the live tape mentioned in the scanned interview in the booklet. At 2:35 of track 4, the volume drops and then goes back up a few seconds later. The Hellhammer cover starts abruptly after the stage banter in track 7, so there may have been some kind of edit there. There's a split-second dropout at 4:03 of track 8, but it doesn't occur during music. Track 10 fades out during stage banter.

The Slaughter Festival was a gig with Vulcano, Dorsal Atlвntica, Korzus, and Sepultura. The 2nd set of live tracks have constant static-y noise during the entire set (there are also prominent artifacts at the beginning of each track); it sounds like waves are softly breaking over the audio. It's annoying, but not loud or intrusive enough to totally ruin these tracks. Also, while it doesn't really affect the songs themselves, Silvio's talking during the stage banter sounds artificially deep, especially compared to the other two live sets. So the pitch may have been distorted or lowered.

The third live set has the worst sound quality. Things often become a wall of noise and it's sometimes hard to even discern the vocals. Track 19 starts with about 40 seconds of the solo section of "Blood Storm." I don't notice any edits so that may be all they really played. Also during track 19 it sounds like there are minor noises from stretched tape, for example at 1:16 and 2:10.

Despite the sound quality of the last 2 live sets, cool boot that really highlights the change in the band's sound when comparing their demo/"Warfare Noise" stuff to the LP material. The demo vocals were a far better style, and while more controlled, the demo is actually much heavier. "Immortal Force" is quite a wild thrash album, and that lets it reach some great over-the-top moments, but the demo is consistently better even for its short length.
