Torrent Description

* Rosa Luxemburg - Collected Works (28 books)
ROSA LUXEMBURG (1871–1919)
was one of the most original and influential Marxist theorists, philosophers, and revolutionary activists of the early twentieth century. Born to a Jewish family in Poland, she became a towering figure in European socialism, sharply critiquing both capitalism and the democratic shortcomings of the Bolshevik model. She spent much of her adult life in Germany, co-founding the anti-war Spartacus League and later the Communist Party of Germany. Her life was cut short when she was summarily executed by paramilitary forces during the Berlin uprising of 1919.
Her early intellectual contributions established her as a premier critic of reformist tendencies within the socialist movement. In her seminal tract, REFORM OR REVOLUTION (1900), she defended the necessity of revolution against the reformist theories of Eduard Bernstein, arguing that the struggle for reforms was a means to an end, not an end in itself. Luxemburg countered that capitalism is inherently unstable and prone to crisis, meaning reform can only delay, not prevent, its collapse.
In THE ACCUMULATION OF CAPITAL (1913), Luxemburg’s economic masterpiece, she offered a ground-breaking analysis of how capitalist economies sustain themselves globally. She expanded upon Karl Marx’s economic theories to explain why capitalism must constantly seek out new markets. She posited that a closed capitalist system cannot generate enough internal demand to absorb its own surplus value, forcing it to violently colonize non-capitalist territories. This text cemented her reputation as a pioneering theorist of imperialism, linking global colonial exploitation directly to the survival needs of industrialized Western economies.
Her belief in the power of the masses and her commitment to democracy became the defining hallmarks of her late career. In THE MASS STRIKE, THE POLITICAL PARTY AND THE TRADE UNIONS (1906), she analyzed the 1905 Russian Revolution to argue that spontaneous strikes are the natural, driving force of proletarian consciousness, rather than actions strictly dictated by party elites. From prison, she wrote the influential CRISIS OF SOCIAL DEMOCRACY (1915), which became known as the Junius Pamphlet after the pseudonym she used. It declared the war a betrayal of the working class and popularized the phrase "socialism or barbarism" to describe the choice facing humanity. Her posthumously published manuscript, THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION (1922) sharply critiqued the Bolsheviks' authoritarian policies, defending democratic freedoms and the need for a revolution rooted in mass participation, declaring that freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently.
THE COMPLETE WORKS OF ROSA LUXEMBURG (Verso, 2013–present), projected to include 17 volumes, is in the process of making her entire body of work available in English, with comprehensive annotations and introductions. Verso also published a companion volume to the series in 2011: THE LETTERS OF ROSA LUXEMBURG represents the largest collection of her letters ever published in English.
For many socialists and communists outside the Stalinist tradition, Luxemburg remains a major theoretical and moral touchstone. Her emphasis on democracy and spontaneous working-class mass action, her critique of bureaucracy and authoritarianism, and her profound humanism continue to inspire revolutionary movements and thinkers around the world.
