Jaki Graham best known for her only 80's hit Set Me Free sure proves her stuff with her 1994 release Real Life. From the pop tinged track You Can Count on Me For Love and the neat version of Rufus's hit Ain't Nobody Jaki sticks to dance the way it has to be. The wonderful Through Your Eyes is a tender ballad that was written by ex Doobie Brother Michael Mcdonald. Jaki also has the markings of a female Rick Astley as she shows on the only single Breaking Away. There is also the fun Shivers and the remake of Joyce Sims Come Into My Life. One of the reasons this album failed in the US is that at it's time of release Critque Records possibly went broke because you don't hear about this strange record label. But other than that a Dancey simply Dancey Album. Enjoy! ~ By Regis

Slightly more raw than 1989's "From Now On", this album features incredible soundwork that plays on the emotions in a comforting way. Standout lyrics on "Rescue Me" and the sheer musical science of "Shivers" help this album to be SO much more than what radio could have hoped for when they concentrated on her remake of the Chaka Khan song. The most moving song on the album is undoubtedly the Michael Mcdonald-penned "Through Your Eyes", which I believe is dedicated to Jaki's son. Trust me, in the mid 90s, R&B acts were a NICKEL a dozen and they had to really be unique if they didn't want to be missed. I think sometimes album covers would falsely reflect what the package had to offer (Klymaxx's "One Day" had the girls looking like gangsta rappers, and they were anything but). Anybody staring at the cover of "Real Life" might think they were getting something like Da Brat or Chantay Savage (possibly pioneers in their own right). But this album is pure poetry, both musically & lyrically, which can't be categorized as R&B, even though the flavor may be thrown in at times. Definitive of my last point, "The Facts of Love" proves that Jaki shouldn't waste her time making so many remakes. People should be trying to emulate HER instead.
