This music was composed between 1998 and 1999 and recorded in the summer of '99, a period of transition, just before my move from the San Francisco Bay Area to New York City.

The material for this album was culled from two separate recording sessions with two different bands. It doesn't quite have the consistency and focus of 1997's Range of Motion, although it is still a good example of Joel Harrison's art. In general, the five tracks that feature pianist Jeff Chimenti are a bit less edgy than the four that don't. The entire disc is enlivened, however, by Paul Hanson's bassoon work; his solo on "The Bearclaw" is particularly astonishing, as is the noise effect he achieves on Harrison's not-at-all-obvious arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's "I Don't Live Today." Harrison's guitar is featured more prominently this time around; his rock influences come to the fore not only on the Hendrix tune but also on "Cry Lazarus," which finds him sounding a bit like Jeff Beck. Compositionally, his most striking statements are "Chant for Jim Pepper," "The Hawk" (inspired by a Dick Barnes poem), and the closing "Question of Faith," a rootsy trio piece that features Harrison on National Steel guitar.
