BRUTAL HAND have recorded a good follow-up to their self-titled debut album. Unfortunately they lost their good singer Brad Bowles, a pity, but at least they found a first-class replacement with Freddy Ferrell, the US seem to have great vocalists growing on trees, so it seems.

Just like on the previous album the band offers strong Heavy Metal with even stronger melodies, but this time keyboardist Doug Collier plays a more prominent role than in the past. Was to be expected, why would you have a key-wizard among your ranks, if you don’t let him play? Don't get me wrong, though, the axes are still swinging, so there is no watering down of their sound.

Overall I have to say that the songs have gotten a bit more progressive than on the debut, but haven’t lost any of their punch, quite the contrary. Especially the middle-high, very powerful vocals give each single song a touch of extra class. The atmosphere of "Heart Of Stone" reminds me of a mix of "The Awakening" of VOODOO X and the heavier era of BLOODGOOD. Other than that the name BARREN CROSS comes to mind several times, just like SAVATAGE in their transitional phase between their heavy early material and the more melodic stuff, but this is just a rough orientation of what awaits you on this album.

The CD hardly has any weaknesses and with "Amon Moloch", starting out sad-balladesque and then taking a dramatic turn for the dynamic they even have a future underground classic. I have no idea why the band still doesn’t have a deal, because in Europe they should be able to score royally with this kind of class (please note that this review originally was written in 2007).
