Casey Mecija, former lead singer of the Toronto indie band Ohbijou, has released her first solo album, Psychic Materials. Back in 2013, Mecija posted a letter on her band’s website announcing that they were going on a hiatus. Since then, Mecija completed a Masters at the University of Toronto and last year become the host of CBC’s the Doc Project.

Fans can stream Mecija’s new album for free on her website now. Each of the eight tracks is accompanied by song lyrics and a custom-made GIF.

“This record was an opportunity for me to articulate desire, exclusion, and love in ways I’ve never done before,” Mecija told CBC Music. “I am proud of it. I wrote it by myself and am releasing it independently. I chose to release it this way so that I don’t have to compromise, so that I can have control over its aesthetics and feel brave.”

Psychic Materials features Ohbijou members Heather Kirby, Anissa Hart, Ryan Carley and Jenny Mecija. DIANA’s Kieran Adams and the Acorn’s Jeff Debutte also contribute to the album, and the Wooden Sky’s Gavin Gardiner mastered the songs.

In the album description posted on her website, Mecija says these songs “contain materials that help me to know who I am, all the while finding comfort in the places where knowing is impossible.”
