BackTrack e' una distribuzione Linux distribuita come live CD/DVD risultata dalla fusione del WHAX (precedentemente chiamato Whoppux) e l'Auditor Security Collection, che era usato per penetration testing. Permette all'utente di includere scripts personalizzabili, tools aggiuntivi e kernel configurabii in distribuzioni personalizzate. Il progetto BackTrack fu creato da Mati Aharoni e Max Moser e in uno sforzo collaborativo che coinvolgeva la community.

BackTrack 2 usci' il 6 Marzo 2007 e includeva oltre 300 strumenti di sicurezza. Una versione beta di BackTrack 3 fu rilasciata il 14 Dicembre 2007 ma fu annunciato che il suo scopo principale era supportare maggiore e piu' nuovo hardware e fornire piu' flessibilita' e modularita'.

BackTrack3 usci' il 19 Giugno 2008. Nuove aggiunte includono SAINT e Maltego. Nessus non venne incluso in questa release, e gli sviluppatori decisero di non aggiornare dalla versione 2.6.21.5 del kernel.

Backtrack4 Beta usci' l'11 Febbraio 2009, il maggiore cambiamento fu passare a Debian.

BackTrack4 pre-release usci il 19 Giugno 2009.

BackTrack4 Final Release e' uscito l'11 Gennaio 2010.

BackTrack is a Linux distribution distributed as a Live CD which resulted from the merger of WHAX (previously Whoppix) and the Auditor Security Collection, which is used for penetration testing.[4] It allows the user to include customizable scripts, additional tools and configurable kernels in personalized distributions. The BackTrack project was created by Mati Aharoni and Max Moser and is a collaborative effort involving the community.

BackTrack 2 was released on March 6, 2007 and includes over 300 security tools.[5] A beta version of BackTrack 3 was released on December 14, 2007, but it was announced that its main focus was to support more and newer hardware as well as provide more flexibility and modularity.

BackTrack 3 was released on June 19, 2008. New additions include SAINT and Maltego. Nessus was not included in this release, and the developers decided not to upgrade from kernel version 2.6.21.5.[6]

BackTrack 4 Beta was released on February 11, 2009, with the biggest change being the move to Debian.[7]

BackTrack 4 pre-release was released on 19 June 2009. [8]
