Notes from the encoder:
This encode aims to compress the uncut friends DVDs into the smallest size while trying to keep an acceptable level of quality. Using x265 10bit encoding, the "Slower" preset, the hqdn3d de-noise filter makes most episodes fit nicely under 200mb while keeping the original AC3 audio track. The reasoning for using the de-noise filter is that the DVDs looked... really bad. There isn't enough bitrate to retain the grain as seen in the much higher bitrate Bluray/Netflix releases. And if it was bad to begin with, why keep it?
One quick note I found while watching through the source... There are parts of the DVDs which have 60i footage in them (any footage that shows stuff shot for TV, E.g. S01E11 the extract from the Jay Leno show is in 60i, S03E04 Joey's milk carton tap commercial gag is filmed in 60i.) Unfortunately, creating variable FPS .mkvs with perfect frame pacing is a long task which involves literally going frame by frame to find cuts in the film. And because starting in season 4 the intro to
every episode jumps between 23.976fps and 59.94fps. I decided to not go down that road. However I will be releasing the special features in 60p (for the ones that need it.)
