In late fifties' Germany, Michael, a 15 year-old boy crosses paths with Hanna, an engimatic, thirtyish tram car employee played by Kate Winslet. They quickly begin an affair. The affair is marked by torrid lovemaking, and Hanna's constant request for the boy to read to her. The affair runs the course of a summer, and then Hanna disappears.
