Nati come gruppo aperto (il collettivo "Wild Bunch") composto da Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant Marshall ("Daddy G") e Andrew Vowles ("Mushroom") , i Massive Attack hanno contribuito a lanciare il trip-hop o "Bristol-sound", sound metropolitano, dark e onirico, figlio di quello che Tricky definì "pre-millennium tension"

Una formula che ha marchiato un decennio, grazie anche agli exploit dei loro concittadini Portishead, del loro ex-collaboratore Tricky e di altri, successivi emuli (basti pensare, ad esempio, al debutto dei Goldfrapp).
Fin dalle origini, la band si è rivelata capace di sintetizzare esperienze musicali e umane diversissime, presentando un'anima "nera" (legata soprattutto agli esperimenti su dub e reggae della comunità caraibica di Bristol) e una "bianca" che, nella persona di Del Naja,( di origini campane ) guarda all'elettronica e alla dance, allora in espansione esponenziale nel Regno Unito.

Sinéad O'Connor, Horace Andy, Madonna, Tricky, Shara Nelson, Mos Def, Elizabeth Fraser e Tracey Thorn, Damon Albarn, sono alcuni dei nomi che hanno collaborato nel loro nel corso degli anni.

Singles 90/98 è una compilation in edizione limitata dei Massive Attack pubblicata nel 1998.
