Margareth, la bella moglie di un diplomatico britannico a Parigi, passa due ore al giorno in un appartamento subaffittato. Il marito, geloso, cerca di smascherarla, ma la trova in compagnia di uno scimpanzé, Max. A questo punto l'uomo chiede alla moglie di portare l'animale a casa, non ci sono problemi, ma col tempo diventa ossessionato dallo strano rapporto che c'è tra Max e Margareth.


Reserved and cool, Margaret is the French wife of Peter, a British diplomat posted to France with their son Nelson. She takes a lover, a chimpanzee she bought from a zoo and installed in a flat. Peter asks that she bring the chimp, Max, to live with them. He obsesses about Margaret and Max's relationship..

All'uscita del film si pensava chissà cosa potessero fare due cineasti così 'estremi' come Oshima e Carrière; invece il risultato è meno 'scandaloso' di quanto si possa credere.
Tuttavia è un film che di questi (brutti) tempi, non sarebbe possibile fare.
