Computer scientist Hannon Fuller has discovered something extremely important. He's about to tell the discovery to his colleague, Douglas Hall, but knowing someone is after him, the old man leaves a letter in his computer generated parallel world that's just like the 30's with seemingly real people with real emotions. Fuller is murdered in our real world the same night, and his colleague is suspected. Douglas discovers a bloody shirt in his bathroom and he cannot recall what he was doing the night Fuller was murdered. He logs into the system in order to find the letter, but has to confront the unexpected. The truth is harsher than he could ever imagine...

Douglas Hall e Hannon Fuller sono proprietari di una società a Los Angeles, posta nel tredicesimo piano di un grattacielo.
Il loro scopo? Cercare di portare all'estremo la tecnologia virtuale e provare a tornare indietro nel tempo fino alla Los Angeles del 1937. Le cose si complicano quando Fuller viene assassinato e le imputazioni cadono sul socio; ma in realtà chi e soprattutto quando è morto Fuller? Nei continui cambi di realtà dei protagonisti si inserisce un nuovo personaggio, Jane (Gretchen Mol), estremamente affascinante e ambigua che contribuisce ancor di più a complicare la situazione.
Il film, girato da Rusnak, noto in Germania per i suoi lavori in televisione, presenta una trama molto fitta e complicata, portando alla conclusione che anche la realtà in cui si vive altro non è che uno dei tanti mondi paralleli e che quindi la realtà non è "reale".
